Egyptian blogger Reda Abdel-Rahman (32) is freed on January 23, 2009, after being detained since last October. Reda is a social worker at a Religious Institute affiliated to Al-Azhar. The young blogger is known as a “Quranist” who rejects the Sunnah (which means “the way and the manners of the prophet Muhammad” – wikipedia) and considers the Quran as the only source of Shariaa (the body of Islamic religious law).

Abdel-Rahman was using his blog “Justice, Freedom and Peace” to promote the Quranists the movement's ideas. Nevertheless, Abdel-Rahman is also a member of Ahmed Subhy Mansour’s family. Mansour is an Egyptian scholar considered as the God Father of Quranists.

The International Holy Quran Center mentioned in a statement that since Reda is released a week ago, he still traumatized by the experience and tells his friends and family members shocking stories of his imprisonment, the statement quoted Abdelrahman:

I was severely beaten and humiliated in my first two weeks to reveal the password of my personal email…They also electrified me to force me to confess to crimes I haven't made.

Abdel Rahman was arrested last October; police picked him from his house to unknown place, and confiscated his computer and a number of CDs that were in his apartment. He was accused of “contempt for the Muslim faith” at the time after officials questioned the manner in which he prays.

According to the Egyptian Initiative for Human Rights (EIPR), Abdel-Rahman was reportedly interrogated by the institution's legal department regarding his online articles and was forced to sign a statement in which he promised “to stop publishing any articles on the Internet or any religious writing.” EIPR told that Abdel-Rahman had been interrogated by state security about his religious beliefs at least twice before his disappearance.
